Using pencycuron to control Rhizoctonia solani

The prevention and control of Rhizoctonia includes:
Planting procedures and pre-sprouting
To avoid losses because of sprout pruning, time between planting and emergence should be as short as possible. Implement proved cultural practices such as:
1) the use of pre-sprouted seed,
2) shallow planting.
3) do not start planting when soil temperature is still less than 10.
Clean seed, Quarantine
Sclerotia on the seed tuber are the most important source of infection in the case of Rhizoctonia of potatoes. Clean seed is an important start to grow healthy potatoes. For this purpose seed quality standards are used
Rotation
Rotation periods of less than three years are risky with respect to accumulation of pathogenic strains and consequent damage to the crop.
Fungicides
Seed treatment
Control of Rhizoctonia starts with clean seed, but treatment may be desirable even when no sclerotia are present, since inoculum may occur as hyphae in the tuber eyes. The elimination of tuber borne inoculum by fungicides is therefore a possible control measure.
Systemic fungicides like the benzimidazol-compounds benomyl, carbendazim, thiabendazol, control pruning of the sprouts as they temporarily inhibit the growth of the fungus.
Solacol contains the antibiotic agent validamycine that causes a disorganized growth of the fungus by which it can not reach the sprout.
None of these agents is able to control the formation of sclerotia on the new tubers, since their action is temporary and fungistatic only.
Compounds like Moncerene(pencycuron) and Rizolex (tolclofos-methyl) applied to the seed or soil prevent the formation of sclerotia on the tubers.
Soil treatment
Control of black scurf by chemical treatment of the soil has been tried with a great number of materials. At present the products Rizolex (tolclofos-methyl) and Moncerene (pencycuron) are used for this purpose.
These products are applied to tubers and soil at planting. The action of these products lasts longer than that of benzimidazoles and validamycine. As a consequence, development of sclerotia on seed tuber is controlled as well.
Soil treatment may be necessary in case of severe soil infestation with Rhizoctonia.
Harvest time and vine killing method
It is good practice to lift potatoes as early after haulm destruction as skin hardening will permit. control by adjustment of harvest time
Immature crops (seed crops)
Especially after killing of vines by chemical treatment, cutting, burning or frost of immature crops an increased formation of sclerotia is to be expected.
Any delay in lifting after vine killing promotes the formation of sclerotia.
After vine killing, roots are still functional for some time. However, since water and minerals can not be received anymore by the foliage, tubers are used as a sink.
As a consequence tubers start leaking.
Formation of sclerotia seems not only due to the leaking of tubers. The development of sclerotia is also favoured by the formation of volatile compounds (such as CO2) as a result of the breakdown of underground plant parts.
Mature crops
Delayed harvest of mature crops may also increase black scurf formation on the skin. The process is however slower than is the case with the early killed immature crops.
